P0133 Oxygen sensor slow response (bank 1 sensor 1)
What P0133 means
The upstream oxygen sensor on bank 1 should switch quickly between rich and lean as the engine computer adjusts the mixture. P0133 means it is responding too slowly. The usual reason is an ageing sensor, and fuel control becomes less precise.
P0133 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Slightly higher fuel consumption
- Possible rough idle
- Technical inspection failure for emissions
Common causes
- Aged oxygen sensor
- Sensor contaminated by oil, coolant, silicone or poor fuel
- Small exhaust leak near the sensor
- Damaged sensor wiring
- Engine misfire or fuel problem affecting the reading
Can I keep driving with P0133?
You can drive, but have it repaired within one or two weeks.
What to check first
- Check for misfire or fuel trim codes and fix those first
- Check for exhaust leaks around the sensor
- Watch the sensor switching rate in live data with a warm engine
- Replace the sensor if it remains slow
