P0601 Internal control module memory checksum error

What P0601 means

The engine control unit checks its stored software every time it starts, and the check has failed. The program or calibration data may be corrupted, so the engine can behave unpredictably or stop working.

P0601 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms

Common causes

  1. Interrupted or incorrect software update (reflash)
  2. Internal failure of the engine control unit
  3. Voltage spike, for example from jump-starting or welding on the car
  4. Water ingress into the control unit

Can I keep driving with P0601?

Have it checked immediately. A corrupted control unit can shut the engine down while driving or make it behave unpredictably.

What to check first

  1. Check the battery, charging voltage and ECU grounds
  2. Clear the code once and see if it returns
  3. Have the engine control unit reprogrammed with the correct software
  4. Replace and code the control unit if reprogramming does not fix it
