P0894 Transmission component slipping
What P0894 means
The transmission control unit has detected that one or more internal components are slipping, based on shaft speeds that do not match the selected gear. Slipping generates heat and wear that can quickly lead to gearbox failure.
P0894 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms
- Engine revs flaring without acceleration
- Harsh or delayed shifts
- Limp mode
- Burnt smell from the gearbox fluid
Common causes
- Low or degraded transmission fluid
- Worn clutch packs or torque converter
- Low line pressure from a pump, filter or solenoid fault
- Faulty speed sensor giving a false slip reading
Can I keep driving with P0894?
You can drive gently to a workshop, but have it checked within one to two weeks and sooner if slipping is obvious.
What to check first
- Check transmission fluid level and condition
- Check for speed sensor and pressure codes
- Change fluid and filter if appropriate and retest
- Have the gearbox pressure-tested and inspected
