P000A Intake (A) camshaft position slow response (bank 1)

What P000A means

Variable valve timing moves the camshaft using oil pressure controlled by a solenoid. P000A means the intake camshaft on bank 1 took longer than expected to reach the commanded position. The engine may feel weaker in the mid-range and use more fuel.

P000A is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms

Common causes

  1. Low, old or wrong-grade engine oil
  2. Sticking or clogged VVT (oil control) solenoid
  3. Worn camshaft phaser
  4. Blocked oil screen at the VVT solenoid
  5. Stretched timing chain

Can I keep driving with P000A?

You can drive, but have the system checked within a week. Check the oil level now; if it is low, top it up before driving further.

What to check first

  1. Check oil level and condition; change oil and filter with the correct grade if overdue
  2. Inspect the VVT solenoid and its oil screen for sludge
  3. Command the camshaft with a scan tool and compare desired and actual angle
  4. Check timing chain stretch and the phaser if the response stays slow
