P0017 Crankshaft/camshaft position correlation, bank 1 sensor B (exhaust)

What P0017 means

The engine computer compares the crankshaft position signal with the exhaust camshaft position signal on bank 1. P0017 means they are out of the expected relationship. This often means the timing chain or belt has stretched or jumped a tooth, which can lead to serious engine damage if ignored.

P0017 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms

Common causes

  1. Stretched timing chain or worn tensioner and guides
  2. Timing chain or belt jumped a tooth, or timing set wrongly after repair
  3. Faulty exhaust camshaft phaser or VVT solenoid
  4. Faulty camshaft or crankshaft position sensor
  5. Low or dirty engine oil affecting the phaser

Can I keep driving with P0017?

Get it checked straight away and avoid high revs. If the timing has jumped, continued driving can cause the valves to hit the pistons.

What to check first

  1. Check oil level and condition and look for related VVT codes
  2. Read camshaft and crankshaft correlation values in live data
  3. Inspect the camshaft position sensor and its wiring
  4. Have the timing chain, tensioner and timing marks inspected if values are out of range
