P0011 Intake (A) camshaft timing over-advanced or system performance (bank 1)

What P0011 means

Variable valve timing uses oil pressure, controlled by a solenoid, to rotate the intake camshaft. P0011 means the intake camshaft on bank 1 is more advanced than commanded or not following commands. Low or dirty oil and a sticking solenoid are the most common causes.

P0011 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms

Common causes

  1. Low, old or wrong-grade engine oil
  2. Sticking VVT oil control solenoid
  3. Clogged oil passages or solenoid screen
  4. Worn camshaft phaser
  5. Stretched timing chain

Can I keep driving with P0011?

Have it checked within a few days and check the oil level now. Continuing with a timing fault can damage the VVT mechanism.

What to check first

  1. Check oil level and condition; change oil and filter if overdue
  2. Inspect and clean or replace the VVT solenoid and screen
  3. Compare commanded and actual camshaft angle in live data
  4. Check timing chain stretch and the phaser if the fault persists
