P0381 Glow plug/heater indicator control circuit/open

What P0381 means

The engine control unit cannot properly control the glow plug indicator on the dashboard. The glow plugs themselves may work normally; the fault is in the circuit that switches the warning lamp, so you lose the cue for when to start the engine.

P0381 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms

Common causes

  1. Failed indicator bulb or LED in the instrument cluster
  2. Open circuit or poor connection between the ECU and the cluster
  3. Instrument cluster fault
  4. Glow plug system fault that is also present (check for P0380 or P0670)

Can I keep driving with P0381?

Driving is fine. In cold weather wait a few seconds after switching on the ignition before cranking, and have the circuit checked within a week or two.

What to check first

  1. Check whether the glow plug lamp lights during the cluster self-test at ignition on
  2. Look for other glow plug codes and fix those first
  3. Inspect the wiring and connectors between the engine control unit and the instrument cluster
  4. Test or repair the instrument cluster if the wiring is intact
