P0380 Glow plug/heater circuit A

What P0380 means

The engine control unit has detected an electrical fault in the glow plug heating circuit of a diesel engine. Glow plugs heat the combustion chambers so the engine starts easily in the cold, so this fault mainly affects cold starting and smoke.

P0380 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms

Common causes

  1. One or more burnt-out glow plugs
  2. Faulty glow plug relay or control module
  3. Broken or corroded wire or connector at a glow plug
  4. Blown glow plug fuse

Can I keep driving with P0380?

You can keep driving, but have it fixed within a week or two, especially before cold weather. Repeated hard starts load the battery and starter.

What to check first

  1. Check the glow plug fuse and the connectors on top of each glow plug
  2. Measure the resistance of each glow plug and replace those that are open-circuit
  3. Test the glow plug relay or control module for supply voltage and output
  4. Clear the code and confirm with a cold start the next morning
