P0441 EVAP system incorrect purge flow

What P0441 means

The purge valve lets fuel vapour stored in the charcoal canister flow into the engine to be burned. P0441 means the engine computer saw either no flow when it opened the valve or flow when the valve should have been shut. It is an emissions fault and does not normally affect driving.

P0441 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms

Common causes

  1. Faulty canister purge valve (stuck open or closed)
  2. Cracked, blocked or disconnected purge hose
  3. Blocked charcoal canister or vent
  4. Damaged purge valve wiring or connector
  5. Faulty EVAP pressure sensor

Can I keep driving with P0441?

Yes, you can keep driving. Have it repaired within one or two weeks, especially before a technical inspection.

What to check first

  1. Check the purge hoses between canister and intake for cracks or disconnection
  2. With the engine off, blow through the purge valve: it should be closed when unpowered
  3. Command the valve with a scan tool and listen or feel for clicking; check its wiring and power
  4. Replace the purge valve if it leaks or does not respond, then clear the code and confirm with a drive cycle
