P0449 EVAP vent valve control circuit/open
What P0449 means
The engine control unit has detected an open or faulty circuit when it tries to operate the evaporative emission (EVAP) vent valve. Without it the system cannot seal itself for leak testing or vent the canister properly.
P0449 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Difficulty filling the fuel tank on some cars
- Usually no change in driving
Common causes
- Failed vent valve solenoid
- Corroded connector, often exposed under the car near the tank
- Broken wire in the vent valve circuit
- Blown fuse
Can I keep driving with P0449?
You can keep driving, but have it checked within one to two weeks.
What to check first
- Inspect the vent valve connector and wiring for corrosion and road damage
- Check the fuse and the supply voltage at the valve
- Measure the solenoid resistance
- Repair the wiring or replace the vent valve
