P043F EVAP leak detection reference orifice high flow
What P043F means
Some EVAP systems measure flow through a small reference orifice to calibrate the leak test. P043F means the flow through that orifice was higher than expected, so the leak detection pump or module cannot give a valid result. The engine is not affected.
P043F is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Car drives normally
- EVAP readiness monitor not complete
- Technical inspection failure
Common causes
- Faulty leak detection pump or module (worn or damaged orifice)
- Disconnected or cracked hose at the pump
- Faulty vent or changeover valve in the pump
- Wiring fault to the pump
- Moisture or debris inside the pump
Can I keep driving with P043F?
Yes, you can keep driving. Have it repaired within one or two weeks.
What to check first
- Inspect the hoses connected to the leak detection pump
- Check the pump wiring and connector
- Run the EVAP leak test with a scan tool and compare readings with specification
- Replace the leak detection pump or module if it fails the test
