P3449 Cylinder 7 deactivation/intake valve control circuit/open

What P3449 means

Some V8 engines switch off cylinders at light load to save fuel, using oil-pressure solenoids that disable the valve lifters. P3449 means the engine computer found an open circuit or electrical fault in the solenoid circuit for cylinder 7. Cylinder deactivation is usually disabled, and the engine may run roughly if a lifter is affected.

P3449 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms

Common causes

  1. Failed cylinder deactivation solenoid
  2. Damaged wiring or connector, often inside the valley under the intake
  3. Low or dirty engine oil
  4. Sticking deactivation lifter
  5. Engine computer driver fault (rare)

Can I keep driving with P3449?

You can drive, but have it checked within one or two weeks. If you hear ticking or feel a misfire, have it looked at sooner, as a stuck lifter can damage the camshaft.

What to check first

  1. Check engine oil level and condition
  2. Measure the solenoid resistance and wiring through the harness connector
  3. Command the solenoid with a scan tool and check for response
  4. Replace the solenoid or repair wiring; inspect lifters if there is a misfire or noise
