U0046 Vehicle communication bus C fault

What U0046 means

Modern cars have several data networks; bus C is one of them, and which systems it connects depends on the manufacturer. U0046 means the network itself has a fault, such as a short, open circuit or a module disturbing traffic. Several systems can lose functions at once.

U0046 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms

Common causes

  1. Damaged or shorted network wiring
  2. A failed module pulling the bus down
  3. Water ingress in a connector on the network
  4. Missing or damaged terminating resistor
  5. Low battery voltage or voltage spikes after jump-starting

Can I keep driving with U0046?

Get it checked today or tomorrow. A network fault can affect several systems at once, including engine, gearbox or braking functions.

What to check first

  1. Test the battery and charging voltage first
  2. Read codes from all modules to see which ones cannot communicate
  3. Measure bus resistance and voltage at the diagnostic socket
  4. Unplug modules on that bus one at a time to find the one disturbing communication, and inspect wiring for damage
