U0121 Lost communication with ABS control module

What U0121 means

The ABS module shares wheel speed and braking data with the engine, gearbox and instrument cluster. U0121 means those modules stopped receiving messages from it. ABS, traction and stability control are normally disabled, and the speedometer may stop working.

U0121 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms

Common causes

  1. Blown ABS fuse or failed power supply
  2. Corroded ABS module connector (often from road water)
  3. Damaged CAN bus wiring
  4. Poor ABS module ground
  5. Failed ABS control module

Can I keep driving with U0121?

Normal braking still works, but without ABS and stability control the wheels can lock under hard braking. Drive carefully and have it checked within one or two weeks.

What to check first

  1. Check the ABS fuses and battery voltage
  2. Try to communicate with the ABS module directly with a scan tool
  3. Inspect the ABS module connector for corrosion and check its power and ground
  4. Check CAN wiring to the module before repairing or replacing the ABS unit
