U0184 Lost communication with radio

What U0184 means

The radio or infotainment unit is a module on the car's network and exchanges data with the cluster, steering wheel controls and other systems. U0184 means other modules stopped hearing from it. It does not affect how the car drives, but audio, navigation, phone or display functions may stop working.

U0184 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Can I keep driving with U0184?

Yes, you can drive; this does not affect the engine or brakes. Have it checked within one or two weeks if the radio or display does not recover.

What to check first

  1. Check the radio fuse and battery voltage
  2. Try a reset: switch off, lock the car, wait several minutes and restart
  3. Check connectors behind the unit, especially after any aftermarket installation
  4. Check for infotainment software updates before replacing the unit
