P0410 Secondary air injection system A

What P0410 means

The engine control unit has found that the secondary air injection system is not working correctly. This system pumps fresh air into the exhaust for the first minute or so after a cold start to heat the catalytic converter faster.

P0410 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms

Common causes

  1. Failed secondary air pump, often from moisture ingress
  2. Stuck or leaking combination/check valve
  3. Faulty air pump relay or fuse
  4. Cracked hoses or a leaking vacuum line to the valve
  5. Carbon-blocked secondary air ports in the cylinder head

Can I keep driving with P0410?

You can keep driving, but have it checked within one to two weeks. A leaking check valve can let hot exhaust reach and destroy the pump.

What to check first

  1. Listen for the air pump running briefly after a cold start
  2. Check the pump fuse, relay and power at the pump
  3. Inspect hoses and the check valve for cracks, leaks or exhaust soot
  4. Replace the failed pump or valve and clear blocked ports if needed
