P0462 Fuel level sensor A circuit low
What P0462 means
The engine control unit sees a fuel level sensor voltage below its normal range. Depending on the car, the fuel gauge may read empty or full regardless of the real level.
P0462 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms
- Fuel gauge stuck at empty or full
- Low fuel warning on with a full tank
- Range display incorrect
Common causes
- Faulty fuel level sender in the tank
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Corroded connector at the fuel pump/sender unit
- Instrument cluster fault on cars where the cluster reads the sender
Can I keep driving with P0462?
You can keep driving, but do not rely on the fuel gauge. Track your mileage to avoid running out, and have it checked within one to two weeks.
What to check first
- Check the sender connector on top of the tank, usually under the rear seat or boot floor
- Measure sender resistance and compare with the specification
- Check the signal wire for a short to ground
- Replace the sender or fuel pump module if the sender is faulty
