P0453 EVAP pressure sensor/switch A circuit high
What P0453 means
The engine control unit sees a voltage from the fuel tank pressure sensor that is above the normal range. This can be an electrical fault or genuinely high pressure in the tank from a blocked vent.
P0453 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Hissing when opening the fuel cap
- Fuel nozzle clicking off early when refuelling
Common causes
- Faulty fuel tank pressure sensor
- Open ground circuit to the sensor
- Blocked vent hose or stuck closed vent valve causing real pressure
- Signal wire shorted to voltage
Can I keep driving with P0453?
You can keep driving, but have it checked within one to two weeks.
What to check first
- Remove the fuel cap and check whether the reading drops to near zero
- Inspect the vent valve and vent hose for blockage
- Check the sensor ground and signal wiring
- Replace the sensor if it reads high with the tank open
