P0461 Fuel level sensor A circuit range/performance
What P0461 means
The engine control unit compares the fuel level signal with the fuel actually used. The reading is not changing in a plausible way, so the fuel gauge cannot be trusted.
P0461 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms
- Fuel gauge stuck, jumping or inaccurate
- Low fuel warning at the wrong time
- Range display incorrect
Common causes
- Worn resistor track on the fuel level sender in the tank
- Float arm sticking or float damaged
- Poor connection at the fuel pump/sender connector
- Instrument cluster fault
Can I keep driving with P0461?
You can keep driving, but do not rely on the fuel gauge. Track mileage since your last fill-up to avoid running out, and have it checked within one to two weeks.
What to check first
- Compare the gauge with the amount of fuel added at a full fill-up
- Check the connector on top of the fuel pump/sender unit
- Measure sender resistance across the float travel for dead spots
- Replace the fuel level sender (often part of the fuel pump module)
