P0501 Vehicle speed sensor A range/performance
What P0501 means
The engine control unit receives a vehicle speed signal, but it does not agree with other data such as engine speed, load or wheel speeds. Functions that depend on road speed, like gear shifts and cruise control, may misbehave.
P0501 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms
- Speedometer erratic or inaccurate
- Harsh or wrong gear shifts on automatics
- Cruise control not working
- ABS or traction warning on some cars
Common causes
- Failing vehicle speed sensor
- Damaged or dirty tone ring or reluctor wheel
- Poor connection or damaged wiring at the sensor
- Wrong tyre size or final drive change
- Faulty ABS wheel speed sensor on cars that take speed from the ABS unit
Can I keep driving with P0501?
You can drive carefully, but have it checked within a week. Do not rely on the speedometer or cruise control until it is fixed.
What to check first
- Check for ABS or wheel speed sensor codes, which often explain the speed fault
- Compare vehicle speed in live data with GPS speed while driving
- Inspect the sensor, its wiring and connector
- Clean or replace the sensor, and inspect the tone ring
