P0523 Engine oil pressure sensor/switch A high
What P0523 means
The engine control unit sees an oil pressure sensor signal above its normal range. This is usually electrical, but it means the car may not warn you if oil pressure actually drops.
P0523 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms
- Oil pressure gauge reading at maximum
- Oil warning light not working as expected
- Check engine light on
Common causes
- Faulty oil pressure sensor
- Open ground circuit to the sensor
- Signal wire shorted to voltage
- Wrong oil viscosity on some engines (real high pressure when cold)
Can I keep driving with P0523?
You can drive carefully, but check the oil level regularly until it is fixed because the warning may not work. Have it checked within one to two weeks.
What to check first
- Check the oil level and that the correct grade is used
- Inspect the sensor connector and wiring
- Check the sensor ground and signal voltage
- Replace the sensor if the wiring is good
