P0521 Engine oil pressure sensor/switch A range/performance

What P0521 means

The engine control unit sees an oil pressure reading that is not plausible for the engine speed and temperature. It could be a faulty sensor, but it can also be a real oil pressure problem, which can quickly damage the engine.

P0521 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms

Common causes

  1. Low oil level or wrong oil viscosity
  2. Faulty oil pressure sensor
  3. Clogged oil filter or oil pickup screen
  4. Worn oil pump or engine bearings
  5. Faulty variable oil pump control on engines that have one

Can I keep driving with P0521?

Check the oil level before driving. If the oil light comes on while driving or the engine starts ticking or knocking, stop and switch off immediately; otherwise have it checked within one to two weeks.

What to check first

  1. Check the oil level, condition and that the correct grade is used
  2. Change the oil and filter if overdue
  3. Measure the actual oil pressure with a mechanical gauge
  4. Replace the sensor if the real pressure is normal; otherwise investigate the pump and bearings
