P0650 Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) control circuit

What P0650 means

The engine control unit has found a fault in the circuit that switches the check engine light. Without a working warning lamp you will not be told about future engine faults, and the car will normally fail the technical inspection.

P0650 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms

Common causes

  1. Failed bulb or LED in the instrument cluster
  2. Open circuit or poor connection between the ECU and cluster
  3. Instrument cluster fault
  4. Communication fault on cars where the light is controlled over the data bus

Can I keep driving with P0650?

You can keep driving, but have it fixed within one to two weeks. Scan the car periodically, as you will not get a warning for new faults.

What to check first

  1. Check whether the check engine light comes on during the bulb check at ignition on
  2. Scan for other stored codes that may be hidden
  3. Inspect wiring and connectors between the ECU and the cluster
  4. Repair the instrument cluster if the wiring is good
