P0628 Fuel pump A control circuit low

What P0628 means

The engine computer or a fuel pump control module switches the fuel pump on and controls its speed. P0628 means the control circuit voltage is lower than expected, often caused by a short to ground. The pump may not run properly, which can cause poor running or a no-start.

P0628 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms

Common causes

  1. Control wire shorted to ground
  2. Damaged or chafed wiring near the tank or under the car
  3. Corroded fuel pump connector
  4. Failed fuel pump relay or fuel pump control module
  5. Failing fuel pump drawing excessive current

Can I keep driving with P0628?

If the car runs normally you can drive, but have it repaired within one or two weeks. The fault can cause stalling or leave you unable to start.

What to check first

  1. Check the fuel pump fuse and relay
  2. Inspect the wiring from the control module to the pump for chafing and corrosion
  3. Check the control circuit for a short to ground with the module unplugged
  4. Test pump current draw and replace the pump or control module as indicated
