U0412 Invalid data received from battery energy control module A

What U0412 means

On hybrid and electric cars, the battery energy control module manages the high-voltage battery and reports its state of charge, temperature and limits to other modules. U0412 means another module received messages from it that are implausible. The car may limit power or charging until the cause is found.

U0412 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms

Common causes

  1. Fault already stored in the battery energy control module
  2. Low or failing 12 V auxiliary battery
  3. Damaged CAN wiring or corroded connector to the battery module
  4. Battery module software mismatch
  5. Internal fault in the battery management module

Can I keep driving with U0412?

You can usually drive if the car enters ready mode, but have it diagnosed within one or two weeks. Expect possible power or charging limits.

What to check first

  1. Read codes in the battery energy control module and hybrid/EV control unit
  2. Test the 12 V battery and its connections
  3. Check for software updates for the battery management and hybrid control modules
  4. Have high-voltage system checks done only by a qualified technician
