U0422 Invalid data received from body control module

What U0422 means

The body control module shares data such as door, light and key status with other modules over the network. U0422 means another module received messages from the BCM that are present but implausible or out of range. The cause is usually a problem inside the BCM, its inputs or its power supply.

U0422 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms

Common causes

  1. Fault code stored in the body control module
  2. Low battery voltage or poor BCM ground
  3. Faulty switch or sensor feeding the BCM
  4. BCM software mismatch after replacement or update
  5. Failed body control module

Can I keep driving with U0422?

You can usually drive, but have it checked within one or two weeks. Make sure lights and wipers work before setting off.

What to check first

  1. Read codes in the BCM itself and repair those first
  2. Check battery condition and BCM power and ground
  3. Inspect connectors for corrosion or water
  4. Check for BCM software updates and correct configuration before replacing the module
