U0428 Invalid data received from steering angle sensor module

What U0428 means

The steering angle sensor reports steering wheel position to the stability control, power steering and driver assistance systems. U0428 means those modules are receiving its messages but the values are implausible. Very often the sensor has lost its calibration, for example after a wheel alignment, battery disconnection or steering work.

U0428 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms

Common causes

  1. Steering angle sensor not calibrated after alignment, battery or steering work
  2. Failing steering angle sensor
  3. Damaged clock spring or column wiring
  4. Low battery voltage
  5. Fault in the module that reads the sensor

Can I keep driving with U0428?

Brakes and steering still work, but stability control may be disabled or act unpredictably. Drive carefully and have the sensor checked within one or two weeks.

What to check first

  1. Check whether the steering wheel is straight when driving straight; if not, have the wheel alignment checked first
  2. Perform a steering angle sensor zero-point calibration with a diagnostic tool
  3. Check battery voltage and the sensor connector at the steering column
  4. Replace the sensor if it still reports implausible values after calibration
