P0121 Throttle/pedal position sensor A range/performance

What P0121 means

The throttle position sensor A signal is present, but it does not agree with other information such as airflow, manifold pressure or pedal position. The engine computer cannot trust it and may limit power.

P0121 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms

Common causes

  1. Carbon build-up in the throttle body
  2. Worn spot on the sensor track
  3. Throttle adaptation not done after cleaning, battery disconnection or replacement
  4. Air leak in the intake after the throttle
  5. High resistance in the wiring or connector

Can I keep driving with P0121?

Have it checked within a day or two. The car may go into limp mode with little power, which is risky in traffic.

What to check first

  1. Read the freeze-frame data to see the throttle position, airflow and engine speed when the fault set.
  2. Inspect and clean the throttle body if it is coated with carbon.
  3. Run the throttle adaptation (relearn) procedure after cleaning or battery disconnection.
  4. Watch the sensor signal for dead spots while slowly opening the throttle; replace the throttle body if the signal jumps.
