P0125 Insufficient coolant temperature for closed-loop fuel control
What P0125 means
The engine computer expected the coolant to reach a minimum temperature within a certain time so it could start using the oxygen sensors to fine-tune fuelling (closed loop). The engine did not get warm enough in time, so it ran longer on a richer cold-start map.
P0125 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Temperature gauge rises slowly or stays low
- Weak cabin heating
- Higher fuel consumption
Common causes
- Thermostat stuck open
- Faulty coolant temperature sensor reading too low
- Low coolant level
- Cooling fan running all the time due to a stuck relay
- Very cold weather combined with short trips
Can I keep driving with P0125?
You can drive, but have it checked within one to two weeks. Start with the thermostat; a cold-running engine uses more fuel and wears faster.
What to check first
- Check the coolant level with the engine cold.
- Watch the live coolant temperature during a drive: if it stays well below normal operating temperature, suspect the thermostat.
- Check that the cooling fan is not running with a cold engine.
- Replace the thermostat; if the temperature reading still looks wrong, test the coolant temperature sensor.
