P0219 Engine overspeed condition

What P0219 means

The engine computer recorded engine speed above the maximum it allows. A single event is often caused by selecting too low a gear at speed; repeated events can mean a gearbox, throttle or sensor problem. Overspeeding can bend valves and damage pistons or the gearbox.

P0219 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms

Common causes

  1. Manual downshift into too low a gear at high road speed
  2. Automatic gearbox slipping or not upshifting
  3. Throttle sticking open or a faulty throttle control
  4. Diesel engine running on its own oil (turbo seal leak) causing runaway
  5. False rpm reading from a faulty crankshaft position sensor

Can I keep driving with P0219?

Have it checked today or tomorrow, especially if you do not know why it happened. Over-revving can cause valve, piston or gearbox damage; if the engine races on its own, switch it off and do not drive.

What to check first

  1. Read the freeze-frame data to see engine speed, road speed and gear when the fault set.
  2. If it followed a known missed shift, check the engine for unusual noise, misfires or loss of compression before continuing to use the car.
  3. Check the automatic gearbox for slipping and correct fluid level, and the throttle for sticking.
  4. On a diesel, check for oil in the intake and turbo; check the crankshaft sensor if rpm readings look erratic.
