P0215 Engine shutoff solenoid malfunction

What P0215 means

Many diesel engines use a shutoff solenoid on the injection pump that opens the fuel supply when the ignition is on and closes it to stop the engine. P0215 means the engine computer detected a fault in that solenoid or its circuit. Depending on the failure, the engine may not start or may not switch off.

P0215 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms

Common causes

  1. Failed shutoff solenoid
  2. Blown fuse or failed relay
  3. Damaged wiring or corroded connector at the pump
  4. Poor ground
  5. Immobiliser or engine computer not enabling the solenoid

Can I keep driving with P0215?

If the engine starts and stops normally, you can drive to a workshop, but have it repaired within one or two weeks. The fault can leave you unable to start.

What to check first

  1. Check the fuse and relay for the shutoff solenoid
  2. Listen for a click at the solenoid when the ignition is switched on
  3. Measure voltage at the solenoid connector with ignition on
  4. Replace the solenoid if it gets power but does not operate
