P0336 Crankshaft position sensor A circuit range/performance
What P0336 means
The engine computer is receiving a crankshaft position signal, but it is noisy, has missing pulses or does not match the expected pattern. The computer may misjudge engine position, causing misfires, stalling or hard starting.
P0336 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Intermittent stalling
- Hard starting
- Misfires or jerking
- Rev counter jumping
Common causes
- Metal debris on the sensor tip or reluctor ring
- Damaged or missing teeth on the reluctor ring
- Failing crankshaft position sensor
- Damaged wiring or interference from nearby ignition leads
- Loose sensor or incorrect air gap
Can I keep driving with P0336?
Get it to a workshop within a few days while the engine still starts. The fault often gets worse until the car stalls or will not start.
What to check first
- Remove the sensor and clean any metal debris from its tip.
- Inspect the reluctor ring for damaged teeth and check the sensor is properly seated.
- Inspect the wiring for damage and routing near ignition components.
- Check the signal with an oscilloscope if available, and replace the sensor if the pattern is erratic.
