P0335 Crankshaft position sensor A circuit

What P0335 means

The engine computer is not receiving a usable signal from the crankshaft position sensor, which tells it engine speed and piston position. Without it, the computer cannot time spark and injection, so the engine may cut out while driving or not start at all.

P0335 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms

Common causes

  1. Failed crankshaft position sensor
  2. Damaged wiring or loose, oil-soaked connector
  3. Damaged or missing teeth on the reluctor ring
  4. Metal debris on the sensor tip or excessive air gap

Can I keep driving with P0335?

Get it to a workshop straight away. The engine can stall without warning while driving, which is dangerous in traffic and leaves you without full power assistance.

What to check first

  1. Watch the rpm reading while cranking: zero rpm means no crankshaft signal.
  2. Inspect the sensor connector and wiring for damage, oil and corrosion.
  3. Test the sensor (resistance for inductive sensors, supply and signal for Hall-effect sensors) and check its tip for metal debris.
  4. Inspect the reluctor ring through the sensor hole, then replace the sensor if it fails.
