P0156 Oxygen sensor circuit (bank 2, sensor 2)

What P0156 means

The engine computer has found a problem with the signal from the downstream oxygen sensor on bank 2, the sensor after the catalytic converter on that side. It mainly monitors the converter, so the car usually drives normally. Bank 2 is the side of a V6, V8 or boxer engine that does not contain cylinder 1.

P0156 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms

Common causes

  1. Aged or contaminated downstream oxygen sensor
  2. Damaged wiring or corroded connector
  3. Signal wire shorted to ground or voltage
  4. Exhaust leak near the sensor

Can I keep driving with P0156?

You can keep driving, but have it checked within one to two weeks. The engine is rarely affected, but the catalyst check cannot run and the car may fail its emissions inspection.

What to check first

  1. Inspect the bank 2 downstream sensor wiring and connector.
  2. Check the exhaust around the sensor for leaks.
  3. Watch the live sensor signal on a warm engine and compare it with the bank 1 downstream sensor.
  4. Replace the sensor if the wiring is good and the signal is implausible.
