P0181 Fuel temperature sensor A range/performance
What P0181 means
The engine computer uses the fuel temperature sensor to correct fuel quantity, because warm fuel is less dense. The sensor reading does not make sense, for example it differs widely from other temperatures after the car has stood cold. The sensor may be in the fuel rail, the return line, the high-pressure pump or the tank.
P0181 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Usually no noticeable change
- Possible hard starting when hot or cold
- Possible slightly higher fuel consumption
Common causes
- Faulty fuel temperature sensor
- High resistance in the connector or wiring
- Faulty flex-fuel composition sensor on cars where it reports fuel temperature
- Wiring damaged near hot engine parts
Can I keep driving with P0181?
You can drive, but have it checked within one to two weeks. The effect is usually small, but fuelling corrections may be slightly off.
What to check first
- After a cold soak, compare the fuel temperature reading with intake air and coolant temperatures; they should be close.
- Check the sensor connector and wiring for corrosion and damage.
- Measure the sensor resistance at a known temperature and compare with the specification.
- Replace the sensor if it is out of specification.
