P0234 Turbocharger/supercharger A overboost condition

What P0234 means

The engine computer measured boost pressure higher than the maximum it allows. Excessive boost can overload the turbocharger and the engine, so the computer usually cuts power by going into limp mode.

P0234 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms

Common causes

  1. Wastegate stuck closed or seized wastegate actuator
  2. Sticking variable-geometry turbo vanes (diesels)
  3. Faulty boost control solenoid valve
  4. Cracked, blocked or disconnected vacuum hose to the actuator
  5. Faulty boost pressure sensor reading too high

Can I keep driving with P0234?

Have it checked today or tomorrow and avoid full-throttle driving. Overboost can damage the turbocharger, pistons or head gasket.

What to check first

  1. Read the freeze-frame data: compare requested and actual boost and the engine speed when it set.
  2. Inspect vacuum hoses to the wastegate or turbo actuator and to the boost control solenoid.
  3. Check that the wastegate or turbo vane linkage moves freely through its full range.
  4. Compare the boost sensor reading with barometric pressure at key on, engine off, and test the boost control solenoid.
