P0243 Turbocharger/supercharger wastegate actuator A

What P0243 means

The engine computer has detected an electrical or functional fault in wastegate actuator A, the solenoid or electric actuator it uses to control turbo boost. If boost cannot be controlled, the computer usually limits engine power.

P0243 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms

Common causes

  1. Failed wastegate (boost control) solenoid valve
  2. Cracked, split or disconnected vacuum hoses
  3. Damaged wiring or corroded connector
  4. Faulty electronic wastegate actuator or its position sensor
  5. Engine control unit driver fault (rare)

Can I keep driving with P0243?

You can drive, but have it checked within one to two weeks. Expect reduced power, and avoid full load in case boost is not being limited.

What to check first

  1. Inspect the vacuum hoses between the solenoid, vacuum source and turbo actuator.
  2. Check the solenoid connector and measure the solenoid resistance against the specification.
  3. Use a scan tool output test, if available, to command the solenoid or actuator and check it responds.
  4. Replace the solenoid or actuator if wiring and hoses are good.
