P0705 Transmission range sensor circuit (PRNDL input)
What P0705 means
The transmission range sensor tells the control units whether P, R, N or D is selected. The signal is missing or shows an impossible combination, which can affect shifting, reversing lights and whether the engine will start.
P0705 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms
- Engine will not start in Park or starts in other positions
- Wrong gear shown on the dashboard
- Reversing lights not working
- Harsh shifts or limp mode
Common causes
- Faulty transmission range sensor
- Sensor out of adjustment
- Damaged wiring or corroded connector at the gearbox

Can I keep driving with P0705?
You can drive carefully, but have it checked within one to two weeks. Make sure the car is really in Park and use the handbrake when parking, as the gear indication may be wrong.
What to check first
- Compare the selector position with the gear shown in live data
- Inspect the sensor connector and wiring on the gearbox
- Check the selector cable adjustment
- Adjust or replace the transmission range sensor
