P2463 Diesel particulate filter restriction, soot accumulation (bank 1)

What P2463 means

The engine computer estimates how much soot is in the diesel particulate filter (DPF) from the pressure difference across it. P2463 means the soot load has reached a level where normal regeneration is no longer allowed or possible. A forced regeneration or cleaning is usually needed, and the car may limit power to protect the filter.

P2463 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms

Common causes

  1. Mostly short journeys that stop regeneration from completing
  2. Faulty DPF differential pressure sensor or blocked sensor pipes
  3. EGR, injector or boost faults producing excess soot
  4. Faulty exhaust temperature sensor preventing regeneration
  5. Filter nearing the end of its life with heavy ash build-up

Can I keep driving with P2463?

Drive only gently and as far as needed to reach a workshop. Continuing with a heavily loaded filter can overheat it during regeneration or crack it.

What to check first

  1. Read soot load, ash load and differential pressure with a scan tool and fix any other engine codes first
  2. Check the pressure sensor and its pipes before trusting the soot reading
  3. Have a forced regeneration done with diagnostic equipment if soot load allows it
  4. If regeneration is not possible or ash load is high, have the DPF cleaned or replaced
