P02ED Diesel intake air flow control system, low air flow detected

What P02ED means

Diesel engines use an intake throttle flap to control air flow, mainly for EGR, regeneration and smooth shutdown. P02ED means the engine computer measured less intake air flow than it expected for the commanded flap position. The engine may lose power and produce more smoke.

P02ED is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms

Common causes

  1. Intake throttle flap sticking or partly closed from carbon build-up
  2. Faulty throttle flap actuator or position sensor
  3. Clogged air filter or restricted intake
  4. Faulty air-flow sensor reading low
  5. EGR valve stuck open displacing fresh air

Can I keep driving with P02ED?

You can drive, but have it checked within one or two weeks. If the car goes into limp mode, drive gently to a workshop.

What to check first

  1. Check the air filter and intake ducting for restriction
  2. Command the throttle flap with a scan tool and compare commanded and actual position
  3. Remove and clean the throttle body and intake if heavily carboned
  4. Check the air-flow sensor and EGR valve operation
