P0353 Ignition coil C primary control circuit/open

What P0353 means

The engine computer switches each ignition coil through its own control circuit. P0353 means the circuit for coil C, usually the coil for cylinder 3, is open or giving an incorrect signal. A misfire on that cylinder often follows.

P0353 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms

Common causes

  1. Failed ignition coil for cylinder 3
  2. Loose, corroded or broken coil connector
  3. Damaged wiring between coil and engine computer
  4. Coil power supply fault (fuse or relay)
  5. Engine computer driver fault (rare)

Can I keep driving with P0353?

You can drive briefly, but have it repaired within one or two weeks, sooner if the engine misfires, to protect the catalytic converter.

What to check first

  1. Check the coil connector for corrosion or damage
  2. Swap the coil with another cylinder and see if the fault moves
  3. Check coil supply voltage and control wire continuity
  4. Replace the coil or repair the wiring
