P0481 Cooling fan 2 control circuit
What P0481 means
The engine control unit has found a fault in the circuit for the second cooling fan, or the high-speed stage of the fan on some cars. Cooling capacity is reduced, especially in hot weather, in traffic or with the air conditioning on.
P0481 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms
- Engine temperature rising in traffic or when towing
- Second fan or high fan speed not working
- Air conditioning weak when stationary
- Check engine light on
Common causes
- Failed fan 2 or high-speed fan relay
- Faulty fan control module
- Blown fuse
- Damaged wiring or connector
- Failed fan motor
Can I keep driving with P0481?
You can keep driving, but watch the temperature gauge and have it checked within one to two weeks. Stop if the engine starts to overheat.
What to check first
- Check the relevant fan fuse and relay
- Command fan 2 or high speed with a scan tool
- Check voltage and ground at the fan motor
- Replace the faulty relay, module or motor
