P0496 EVAP system high purge flow
What P0496 means
The engine control unit has detected vacuum or vapour flow from the charcoal canister when the purge valve should be closed. A purge valve that leaks or sticks open lets fuel vapour into the intake at the wrong time.
P0496 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms
- Hard starting or stalling just after refuelling
- Rough idle
- Check engine light on
- Possible fuel smell
Common causes
- Purge valve stuck open or leaking
- Purge valve wiring shorted so the valve stays energised
- Purge and vent hoses swapped or wrongly routed
- Charcoal canister saturated from overfilling the tank
Can I keep driving with P0496?
You can keep driving, but have it checked within one to two weeks. Avoid topping up the tank after the pump clicks off.
What to check first
- Disconnect the purge valve and check whether it holds vacuum when unpowered
- Check the hose routing between the canister, purge valve and intake
- Inspect the canister for liquid fuel or charcoal debris
- Replace the purge valve, and the canister if it is contaminated
