P0480 Cooling fan 1 control circuit
What P0480 means
The engine control unit has found a fault in the circuit that switches the primary radiator cooling fan. If the fan cannot run, the engine can overheat in traffic or at idle, and the air conditioning may stop cooling well.
P0480 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms
- Engine temperature rising in slow traffic or at idle
- Cooling fan not running, or running all the time
- Air conditioning weak when stationary
- Check engine light on
Common causes
- Failed cooling fan relay
- Faulty fan control module or resistor
- Blown fan fuse
- Damaged wiring or corroded connector at the fan or relay
- Seized or failed fan motor
Can I keep driving with P0480?
You can drive with care, but watch the temperature gauge closely and have it fixed within one to two weeks. If the temperature climbs above normal, stop and switch off the engine to avoid head gasket damage.
What to check first
- Check the fan fuses and relay first
- Command the fan on with a scan tool or switch on the air conditioning and see if it runs
- Check power and ground at the fan connector
- Replace the relay, control module or fan motor as found
