P0071 Ambient air temperature sensor range/performance

What P0071 means

The engine computer compares the ambient temperature sensor with other temperature sensors, such as intake air temperature, after the car has stood for a while. P0071 means the ambient reading does not match what it expects. It affects the temperature display and climate control but does not harm the engine.

P0071 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms

Common causes

  1. Faulty ambient temperature sensor
  2. Poor connection or corrosion at the connector
  3. Sensor dislodged and heated by the engine or radiator
  4. Faulty intake air temperature sensor used as reference
  5. Wiring with high resistance

Can I keep driving with P0071?

Yes, you can drive. Have it repaired within about a week.

What to check first

  1. Compare ambient and intake air temperature readings after the car has stood overnight
  2. Check the sensor is correctly mounted in the airflow
  3. Check the connector for corrosion
  4. Replace the sensor if its reading is wrong
