P0087 Fuel rail/system pressure too low (bank 1)

What P0087 means

The engine computer measures fuel pressure in the rail that feeds the injectors and compares it with what it commanded. P0087 means the actual pressure is too low. On diesels and direct-injection petrol engines this usually leads to power loss, limp mode, hesitation or stalling.

P0087 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms

Common causes

  1. Clogged fuel filter
  2. Weak in-tank or low-pressure fuel pump
  3. Worn high-pressure fuel pump
  4. Faulty pressure regulator or metering valve
  5. Air or leak in the fuel supply lines, or very low fuel level

Can I keep driving with P0087?

Get it checked as soon as possible. Low fuel pressure can cause sudden power loss or stalling in traffic, and on diesels running lean can damage the high-pressure pump and injectors.

What to check first

  1. Make sure the tank has enough fuel, then compare desired and actual rail pressure in live data at idle and under load
  2. Replace the fuel filter if it is due or of unknown age (bleed the system on diesels)
  3. Measure the low-pressure supply from the tank pump; low pressure here points to the lift pump or lines
  4. If supply is good, test the high-pressure pump, regulator and injector leak-off
