P0072 Ambient air temperature sensor circuit low
What P0072 means
The ambient temperature sensor, usually behind the front bumper or grille, measures outside air temperature for the display, climate control and some engine functions. P0072 means its signal voltage is below the normal range, which the computer reads as an impossibly high temperature. Engine operation is rarely affected.
P0072 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms
- Outside temperature display wrong or showing dashes
- Climate control working poorly
- Check engine light on
- Ice warning not shown when it should be
Common causes
- Faulty ambient temperature sensor
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Damaged wiring after bumper damage or repair
- Corroded connector
- Fault in the module that reads the sensor
Can I keep driving with P0072?
Yes, you can drive; this does not harm the engine. Have it fixed within one or two weeks.
What to check first
- Inspect the sensor behind the bumper or grille for damage
- Check the connector and wiring for chafing or corrosion
- Measure sensor resistance and compare with the temperature table
- Replace the sensor if its resistance is wrong
