P2101 Throttle actuator control motor circuit range/performance

What P2101 means

The engine control unit controls the throttle with an electric motor and checks the result with position sensors. The throttle is not reaching the commanded position, so for safety the ECU usually limits engine power.

P2101 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms

Common causes

  1. Dirty or carbon-fouled throttle body
  2. Failing throttle motor or gears in the throttle body
  3. Poor connection or damaged wiring at the throttle body
  4. Low battery voltage
  5. Faulty engine control unit driver (rare)

Can I keep driving with P2101?

Get it checked within a few days. Limp mode can leave you with too little power to merge or overtake safely, and the engine may stall.

What to check first

  1. Check the battery voltage and the throttle body connector
  2. Inspect and clean the throttle body, then perform the throttle adaptation
  3. Check the throttle motor circuit for resistance and wiring faults
  4. Replace the throttle body if the fault returns
