P2097 Post-catalyst fuel trim system too rich (bank 1)
What P2097 means
The engine control unit uses the oxygen sensor after the catalytic converter to fine-tune the mixture. That sensor keeps reporting a rich exhaust on bank 1 and the correction has reached its limit, so the engine is likely running rich.
P2097 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Increased fuel consumption
- Fuel or sulphur smell from the exhaust
- Possible black smoke or rough running
Common causes
- Faulty upstream oxygen sensor reading lean and causing rich running
- Faulty downstream oxygen sensor
- Leaking fuel injector
- Excessive fuel pressure from a faulty regulator
- Failing catalytic converter
Can I keep driving with P2097?
Get it checked within a few days. Running rich wastes fuel and can overheat and destroy the catalytic converter.
What to check first
- Check for other fuel trim, oxygen sensor or misfire codes
- Compare front and rear oxygen sensor readings and fuel trims in live data
- Check fuel pressure and look for leaking injectors
- Replace the faulty oxygen sensor or fuel system part
