P2096 Post-catalyst fuel trim system too lean (bank 1)

What P2096 means

The rear oxygen sensor after the catalytic converter fine-tunes the fuel mixture. P2096 means this fine-tuning has reached its lean limit on bank 1: the rear sensor sees too much oxygen. Exhaust leaks letting air in and air leaks on the intake side are the usual causes.

P2096 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms

Common causes

  1. Exhaust leak near the front or rear oxygen sensor
  2. Vacuum leak on the intake side
  3. Faulty or ageing downstream or upstream oxygen sensor
  4. Dirty air-flow sensor
  5. Weak fuel pump or clogged injectors

Can I keep driving with P2096?

Have it checked within a few days. A lean mixture can affect how the engine runs and overheat the catalytic converter over time.

What to check first

  1. Check for exhaust leaks at the manifold, flex pipe and catalyst joints
  2. Check short- and long-term fuel trims and look for vacuum leaks
  3. Compare front and rear oxygen sensor signals
  4. Replace the faulty sensor or repair the leak, then clear and confirm with a drive
